Suilven, also known as Sula Bheinn, is one of the most recognizable mountains that can be found in Scotland, and it is located in the northern part of the island of Great Britain, within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Even though it is only 731 meters (2,398 feet) high, the mountain rises almost vertically, and with its remoteness, it is very attractive for climbers to come and “conquer” this small rocky giant.

The unique outline makes it certainly one of the finest mountains in the country, and as there are paths that lead throughout the routes to the top, the highest point is Caisteal Liath, better known as Grey Castle, founded at the northwest end of the ridge. When seen from the sea, Suilven resembles more like a large grey pillar, hence the name, while from the inland it resembles more like a steep-sided pyramid.

Considered to be formed from a Torridonian sandstone, there is some erosion around it which might have occurred during an episode of glaciation; nonetheless, when climbed atop, the most remarkable aspect is the landscape view of the entire surrounding area around Suilven.

Rising from the wilderness of Assynt in Sutherland, Suilven is a geological masterpiece that looks more like a stranded island than a typical mountain. While its Torridonian sandstone peaks are iconic and quite easy to recognize, the mountain actually sits on a much older foundation of Lewisian gneiss, some of the oldest rock in the world. Its famous 2 km (1.25 mi) long ridge is notched by a central dip known as Bealach Mòr, and the entire massif is remarkably narrow.

At some points, the Suilven ridge is only a few meters wide with steep drops on either side, but beyond its geology, Suilven gained modern cinematic fame as a central filming location for the 2017 film Edie, where the protagonist climbs the peak to fulfill a lifelong dream.

In conclusion, this lonely grey mountain has been known for many centuries, and nowadays it gets more attention from enthusiasts who would like to mark Suilven on their list as a mountain they conquered. If you are the adventurous type of person who would like to climb a desolate place, then Suilven is the best location for you to discover the wild side of Scotland, as it promises amazing adventure with amazing landscape.
