Lake Garda is a natural and quite popular lake which is the largest lake to be found in Italy, and with its beautiful surroundings that have inspired authors and artists alike, it has become one of the most visited places in the country. Lake Garda has both old charming villages and modern towns with all manner of facilities, which makes it very convenient to be liked by all groups of people.

Lake Garda is believed to have been formed at the end of the last Ice Age, when glaciers formed this alpine region of Central Europe where the lake is located. This is also considered to be the heart of the Italian lakes, which are among the most visited natural sites in the Italian Republic.

Due to its grandiose size, Lake Garda and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona, which lies to the south-east, Brescia, which lies to the south-west, and Trentino to the north. As the lake is very close to the historical and cultural cities of Verona, Venice, and Milan, from there you can do a short day trip and visit the towns and communes which surround the lake, thus giving you the oppoertunity to see something different from Italy than the usual historic Roman structures.

Be not tricked, because despite the wonderful nature, there are still some medieval forts and castles that bear testimony to Venetian and Veronese rulers, which can be found around the lake. Even the infamous Mussolini entertained his mistress in a villa that is now a restaurant in Gardone Riviera, but from the 21st century, it should be mentioned that the James Bond film Quantum of Solace with Daniel Craig featured a frantic road chase scene alongside Lake Garda.

Geographically seen, the northern part of Lake Garda is narrower and surrounded by mountains, where the majority of them belong to the Gruppo del Baldo. The shape of these mountains is typical of a moraine valley, and they probably have been formed under the action of a former Paleolithic glacier.

As there are traces of the glacier’s actions which are evident today, in more recent years it has been hypothesised that the glacier occupied a previously existing depression, which was created by stream erosion 5 to 6 million years ago. Overall, the general knowledge is that these types of lakes are certainly formed by glaciers, and Lake Garda is no exception here.

The lake has numerous small islands and five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. The main tributary to the lake is the Sarca River, and others include Ponale River, Varone River, and various streams from both mountain sides, while the only outlet is the Mincio River.

If the water level of the Adige River is too high, then excess water is diverted to the lake through the Mori-Torbole tunnel, because the only function of this tunnel is to reduce the water levels in the river upstream of the province of Verona by discharging its excess water into Lake Garda. In any case, this lake is very alluring, and something people should see in person.
