Before people began flocking into dark theaters to view tales played out on a screen, man was fascinated with the idea of motion. The science behind this fascination was called persistence of vision, which is an optical principle that enables man to see an image even after it has been withdrawn from his visual field. The perception of motion is created when a series of still images is presented at great speed, and the human eye catches something that appears as a moving picture. In the 19th century, inventors and scientists utilized this concept to create entertainment with optical toys like the zoetrope, phenakistoscope, and praxinoscope. These toys were not narrative tools, but they were rather circular shows featuring horse gallops, acrobatic feats, and even morphing faces.
It is important to note that the fascination with this visual experience occurred in conjunction with dramatic technological advances. The Second Industrial Revolution transformed everyday existence through the introduction of electricity, mechanized manufacturing, photography, and new methods of transport. This industrialization, which was different than the First Industrial Revolution, allowed cities to grow, industrialization to rapidly expand, and the commercialization of leisure time was another effect that was also felt during this period. The cinema industry did not develop as an independent art form, but rather, the emergence of cinema technology, which occurred in the context of the existing industrial setting.
The history of cinema shows that it did not arise in its perfected form, and it was born with a curious double origin story. First, it was born as a technical wonder, mesmerizing viewers with its simple ability to capture photographs in motion. In time, it would be reborn as a systematic means of visual expression through which emotion, drama, and plot were conveyed. Such is the nature of the early history of film. Cinema was essentially reborn twice; first through the Lumière brothers, showing the world cinema as a view on life, and later through pioneers such as Edwin S. Porter and D.W. Griffith.
The Birth of the Image: The Lumière Era (1895–1902)
The crucial turning point for cinema’s social acceptance was brought about by the creation of the Cinématographe by Auguste and Louis Lumière. While Edison’s Kinetoscope was limited to an individual looking through a viewing box at a picture, the Cinématographe was able to operate as both a filming tool and a projector all at once. The nature of cinema was thus revolutionized with respect to its social impact. Film became something that could be projected onto a screen and experienced in group form.
The Lumière brothers staged a screening of their movies at the basement of the Grand Café in Paris on 28 December 1895, which is widely considered the first public presentation of motion pictures for profit. The movies exhibited were relatively short, silent, and without any storyline. Nevertheless, they left a lasting impression. Films like Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory captured reality in a way that photographs could not achieve. It was not about stories; rather, the attraction came from seeing oneself and one’s work and environment being brought to life onscreen through a technological marvel.
Among the earliest films that made the impact of the medium obvious was L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat. The legend that people ran away from the screen in fright as the train neared them is somewhat exaggerated; nonetheless, it carries the key message. Cinema was an art of evoking very strong sensations and emotions, and the films by the Lumière brothers belong to what became known among film experts as “Cinema of Attractions,” where emphasis is laid more on showing things to the audience rather than telling stories.
The Architect of Magic: Georges Méliès
While the Lumières considered the camera a dispassionate recording device, Méliès saw it as a mechanism for deception. Being a magician by profession, Méliès realized that film had the ability to create reality rather than simply capture it. It was during one instance where a technical problem resulted in the transformation of objects on film that Méliès realized film could manipulate reality.
Very soon, Méliès evolved a unique film style based on stage acting and optical illusion. Set design included painted backgrounds, characters delivered exaggerated movements, and the camera never moved; the viewer felt he was sitting inside the theater. Yet within such limitations, Méliès’ creativity flourished. One of his most important films, A Trip to the Moon (1902), became an epoch-making work in cinematographic art. Using inspiration from literature, this picture featured a fantastic journey through outer space, including unusual scenery and events. Cinema provided the viewer with the first-ever consistent fictional universe.
While Méliès pioneered techniques, he also demonstrated the constraints inherent in early film grammar. The film was created through tableau-like shots, with no movement from one end of the screen to the other. It did not take into account any spatial dynamics, nor did it rely on much more than visual spectacle to connect emotionally. However, what Méliès did show was that film was more than just capturing reality.
The Evolution of Language: Edwin S. Porter
This second, equally important, change came about when filmmakers realized that meaning can be constructed out of the interaction between different shots. The man behind this innovation was Edwin S. Porter of the Edison Manufacturing Company. Instead of relying on the principle that one shot equaled one scene, he used editing techniques to tell stories.
In The Life of an American Fireman (1903), Porter offered several viewpoints of a rescue operation, making it difficult to present a linear narrative. Though rudimentary compared to films made in later years, The Life of an American Fireman showed that scenes could be captured from various viewpoints, allowing filmmakers to reorganize them for more clarity. In the same year, The Great Train Robbery employed the use of cross-cutting to create suspense.
One of the most powerful scenes in Porter’s films would be when he used the technique of a close-up shot. This scene was of an outlaw shooting right towards the camera, and it completely removed the unseen wall between the movie screen and the audience. Such a scene meant that the film industry had grown in its sense of power. It meant that the camera was able not only to record but also to direct and influence viewers.

The Consolidation of Form: D.W. Griffith (1908–1915)
The one who organized all these new emerging techniques into a system was D.W. Griffith. For many years, working for Biograph Studios, he made hundreds of short films, which were like laboratories where he could experiment. The close-up, which was just a gimmick, became a powerful device for showing the inner world of people.
Cross-cutting also acquired a greater level of complexity in Griffith’s hands. In films like The Lonedale Operator, for example, the use of parallel editing added tension by weaving together elements of danger and rescue to create interest via rhythm and pacing. Another important innovation involved the movement of the camera itself. No longer stationary, it tracked the movements of the actors and showed places, as well as revealing them to the viewer.
This goal reached its climax in the film, The Birth of a Nation, from 1915, which revealed the full potential that films have to be long, complex, and well-paced. On a technical level, The Birth of a Nation was innovative, with the editing, staging, and storytelling that were all done on an entirely new level. Yet, the film remains one of the most controversial achievements in the history of filmmaking precisely because it romanticized racism and helped the rebirth of the KKK movement. In short, film has the power to achieve great things, but also to create evil.
Griffith was not a lone pioneer; however, his cinematographer, Billy Bitzer, made important contributions to lighting, camera movements, and shot composition. This combination of Griffith and Bitzer is a perfect example of how film developed through teamwork rather than individual brilliance.
The Legacy: From Vaudeville to Hollywood
As cinematic language evolved, the social context surrounding the viewing of films changed as well. Nickelodeons, which were small cinemas designed solely for the showing of films, sprang up all around urban areas. They provided inexpensive entertainment and gave films their status as a popular form of entertainment. Films also grew longer and more complex.
At the same time, the industry moved to the West Coast and started evolving into the Hollywood we know today. The climate in southern California was ideal for filming, and the remoteness allowed for the avoidance of patent litigation pursued by the Motion Picture Trust controlled by Thomas Edison. Hollywood did not happen accidentally; it happened because it had to happen.
This was the beginning of the transformation of cinemas into institutions. By the mid-1910s, audiences demanded consistency, continuity, and emotionality. Intertitles were added to the silent movies, thus improving the storyline, and all the principles of film grammar were established at this point, so that all future innovations would be built on them.

It had progressed from being a mere spectacle to becoming a highly developed form of visual communication that could tell a story transcending culture. In the process of developing this highly developed art form, the tradition of spectacle was not abandoned but incorporated into storytelling.
Early filmmakers created principles that still govern the art form, and when doing editing, framing, movement, and rhythm, we know today that they have become essential components in making films due to the processes that happened throughout history. Overall, no matter what advances technology makes, sound, color, special effects, and animation can all trace their roots back to this crucial period.
Cinema in its early form revolutionized the way we perceived things, and it made us learn how to decipher images, understand their logic, and experience emotions through movement. Overall, the cinema developed the first universal language, a language not conveyed through words but through light, shadows, and time.
